Traditional German potato pancakes (Kartoffelpuffer) are crispy on the outside and tender inside. Made with grated potatoes, onions, and simple seasonings, these golden pancakes are perfect for serving with applesauce or sour cream. A delicious comfort food for any occasion!

  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and grated
  • 1 small onion, grated
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp nutmeg (optional)
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Place grated potatoes in a clean kitchen towel and squeeze out excess moisture.
  2. In a bowl, mix potatoes, onion, eggs, flour, salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
  3. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
  4. Drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil, flattening them into pancakes.
  5. Fry for 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  7. Serve warm with applesauce or sour cream.
